The European Union (EU)

The European Parliament is the EU’s legislative body, directly elected and responsible for supervisory and budgetary functions.

The European Parliament consists of 720 members who:

 

  • Adopt European laws alongside the EU Council, based on proposals from the European Commission.
  • Make decisions on international agreements and EU enlargement.
  • Exercise democratic supervision over other European institutions.
  • Consider petitions from citizens and appoint commissions of inquiry.
  • Discuss monetary policy issues with the European Central Bank.
  • Monitor elections.
  • Establish and approve the EU budget, including the multiannual financial framework.
